From Code to Conscience

A new topic that stood out to me in Chapter 1 was 1.1.15: Technology and Ethics. Technology and ethics are not talked about enough. The tech world is very powerful, and if it’s not used correctly, it could be destructive. Ethics describes personal behaviors that show responsibility and trust when no one is watching. The rules of ethics that should be considered when using the internet include confidentiality, human dignity, civility, and digital property rights. The rule of ethics that stood out the most to me was confidentiality. Confidentiality means respecting and honoring data and information we’re not allowed to share. This rule should be considered when posting on social media, writing an email, sending a text, or interacting with others physically. I can say that after learning about these rules, I am more cautious about what I say to others online and in person. For those of you reading, try to learn these rules and apply them to your life as well! They can be very helpful.

  1. Mastering technology = power!

Ethics = will a person do good or do bad with power?

Interesting of shifting to Confidentiality = power over one's own information :-)

Yes, one should definitely exercise power to protect one's own information and other people's information under one's power ^_^

  3. Absolutely. I think about this more than I would like to. Especially when you see around you the analog I was born and raised on is closely coming to an end. Future generations will have to enforce serious safekeeping and have strong ethics to ensure the safety and privacy of personal data and information.

  4. I agree that technology can be very dangerous when it isn't used correctly which is why learning about the ethics that come with it are important. Especially confidentiality as it something many of us value within our daily lives.

  6. I used to be really immature and would say inappropriate things to people online. Most of the time talking to my friends. As I've grown and matured, I realized that digital footprint is a thing and I should be careful about what I say and do in the online world.

  7. Indeed it is very misunderstood how confidential things really are online (as soon as you put something online it is already subject to less confidentiality). It is important to be weary when both posting online and speaking with people in person. I feel it is in our nature as human beings to want to trust others, but our personal information is something we should protect. The only real safe place is the mind, which is something most people tend to forget.

  8. The internet is unforgiving and ruthless. Once you post, it is no longer confidential. You have to be mindful of what you post and have thick skin because people will try to find where you work if they disagree with your post.

  9. I agree with your perspective on this topic. I think one of the biggest hurdles we face at overcoming this as a society is getting people to care. Things are overshared and misused constantly and its simply because people don't care if it comes at another's expense so long as it benefits them. It's quite sad.

  10. I feel like technology for as much as I love it has a big grey area because it can easily help millions but also the reason why so many find a way to abuse it's power of anonymously.

  11. Data is definitely needed to stay confidential. It is scary to think if someone with the wrong idea had the info it could be used for the wrong thing.
